HAYLEY-ANN ROBERTS
Hayley-Ann Roberts was born five days late on 26th September 1979. After her parents divorce, she was raised by her mother Sheila and stepfather Nigel in Peterborough, Cambs. She has two half sisters, Leanne, 20 and Natalie 18, from her father’s second marriage.
Even throughout her early years she displayed a love of performing, always singing, dancing and acting.
At the age of seven, she was given her first microphone and she was hooked.
“I think it only lasted 2 hours” she laughs “I put on my own little show, but it went on so long my parents eventually took the batteries out so they could get some peace.”
She wrote her first song at the tender age of 12, and joined her first band as a backing/lead singer at just 15.
Over the next few years, she performed as a vocalist in various genre bands, whilst honing her vocal skills with intensive singing lessons.
Her musical influences are mostly derived from strong, independent female artists such as Pink, Kelly Clarkson, Alanis Morissette, and Gwen Stefani among others.
Along with performing vocals for Respond, Hayley-Ann is also the main lyrical force behind their songs, drawing her inspiration from her own relationships, past and present, and from those around her in order to give each song its own identity.
When speaking with Hayley-Ann it is easy to see how passionate she is about each song the band writes.
“I have never wanted to write an album of songs about having your heart broken” She says “I wanted each song we write to tell its own story, from its own point of view. Its important to me that each song stands alone in its own right-they aren’t just songs about being in love, not if you really look at the lyrics. These songs are about being human, and the good and bad characteristics that we all display.”
